Roots of Recovery Grow at New Columbia VA Therapeutic Space

A quiet corner of the Columbia VA Health Care System has been transformed into a sanctuary for healing following the official ribbon cutting of the new Whole Health Garden. Designed as a therapeutic escape, the garden offers veterans a dedicated space to reconnect with nature and each other while pursuing healthier lifestyles. The initiative was spearheaded by Kinsey Silvers, a Whole Health Recreation Therapist who believed that giving veterans a chance to get their hands dirty could unlock significant mental and physical health improvements.

Bringing the vision to life required a massive collaborative effort across several departments. Christopher Zell, the chief of engineering, noted that his team focused on creating an inclusive environment accessible to veterans of all abilities. From installing specialized fencing and pergolas to managing complex plumbing and electrical needs, the facility’s construction shop and maintenance crews turned a simple sketch into a fully functional outdoor oasis. For many of the staff involved, transforming an underutilized green space into a tool for veteran recovery became a deeply meaningful mission.

The impact of the garden extends far beyond aesthetics, aligning with the broader VA goal of holistic wellness. Gardening is widely recognized for reducing stress, improving heart health, and boosting overall mood, making it an ideal supplement to traditional clinical care. To maximize these benefits, the center has already implemented six week therapeutic classes and weekly sessions hosted by the Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Recovery Center. Plans are also underway to launch a monthly garden club and cooking workshops where participants can learn to prepare the fresh produce they harvest themselves.

Early reactions from veterans have been overwhelmingly positive, often resulting in participants staying long after their scheduled classes end just to keep working side by side. According to Silvers, the most rewarding part of the project hasn’t just been seeing the plants flourish, but witnessing the genuine camaraderie bloom among those using the space. As more programs roll out, she encourages everyone in the VA community to step outside and join in on the collective experience of learning and growing together.
